HARRY JARKEY TURNS 96 ON AUG. 11th
http://detroitkidshow.com/happy_birthday_harry.htm
Harry Jarkey, a Detroit TV personality and nightclub entertainer in the late '50s and '60s, was best known for a morning variety program called Our Friend Harry, which ran from 1957-59, as well as The Fun House
, a children's show with Ricky the Clown. He continued his career at places like The Roostertail and Bay City's Wenona Beach Amusement Park's casino, where he worked for 30 years, until his retirement at age 75. He moved to southern California in the '70s to live near another former Detroiter and friend, Danny Thomas.
Ed Golick, webmaster of www.detroitkidshow.com has put together a Happy Birthday Harry Jarkey! email campaign.
If you remember Harry, please take a minute to send an email (include your memories of him if you'd like) to happybirthdayharry@gmail.com. And even if you don't remember him, send an email anyway! After all, how often does one of Detroit's former celebrity icons turn 96?!
Ed, who will gather the emails and send them on to Harry, tells me that he's really a great guy and will be elated with all of the attention. (But then, have you ever known a performer who wasn't?)

SWINGIN' TIME DVDs
(Left) Robin gets in the groove with 'the kids' (as he always called them) (Right) The outrageous Wayne Cochran.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Over the years, a number of folks have written to me asking if there were any existing Swingin' Time shows.
As luck would have it, L.A. resident Dave Fisher, Cass Tech '63, the cutie in the picture above who was a 'regular' on Swingin' Time, home-taped six shows back then and has now burned them to DVD.
They are dated: 8-27-66, 9-3-66, 9-10-66, 9-17-66, 12-24-66 and 3-11-67.

If you're interested in these DVDs, contact me at info@detroitmemories.com I'll send you a PDF that lists the shows and artists who appeared along with information on how you can obtain these disks.

Marshall Crenshaw is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and rock music historian. He was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 11, 1953 and grew up in the suburb of Berkley.
Crenshaw began playing guitar at age 10.
From 1968 to 1973 he led the band Astigafa (above), an acronym for "a splendid time is guaranteed for all."
He scored a top 40 hit in 1982 with "Someday, Someway" from the film Night Shift (1982).
Retro rocker Robert Gordon took "Someday, Someway" to #76 in 1981, and Crenshaw's version made #36 the next year.

NEWSLETTER KUDOS
Hi Eileen,
Thanks again for another wonderful issue of the Detroit Memories Newsletter. Living in Detroit in my youth was truly the happiest time of my life, and each issue brings forth more and more forgotten delights of those times. I pray that our beloved city will someday experience the full renaissance it deserves.
Keep up the good work!

WHEN BASEBALL WAS FUN
Hi Eileen,
I'm Bobby Hoeft, former Hearst All American, out of Detroit and Briggs Stadium in 1947 and then signed by the Detroit Tigers. I've a published book called When Baseball Was Fun (part of it can be read online) all about old Detroit in the rollicking '40s and '50s. I also recently founded and published a Tiger quarterly by the same name.
We just mailed out our summer edition in memory of George Kell and Mark Fidrych. They were both lifetime subscribers, along with 52 other noted former Tigers. We have many letters, baseball cards and profiles from them both. We also have an authentic story written by Charley Gehringer titled The First Time I Stepped Into Briggs Stadium which is included in the book.
I was informed about your great Detroit Memories by Jerry Richards in Arizona.

MAKE WAY FOR YOUTH
I grew up in Detroit and lived in the area until 1995 when I moved to Arizona.
During the '50s and early '60s, I sang with a Detroit group called "Make Way for Youth," a Don Large Chorus. We practiced every Tuesday and Thursday evening in the WJR studios and were on the radio every Saturday.
It would be fun to see how many folks are still out there who participated in this group and where they are today.
Joanne Blues
---------- EILEEN RESPONDS: 'Make Way for Youth' produced a wealth of talent, not the least of whom was Maureen Bailey, better known as Christmas Carol. You may also be surprised to know that DJ Lee Alan was also part of this Chorus, too. In fact, he talks about his involvement in Jim Hampton's Detroit Radio Recall show. (See info below.)
Next month, in the August 2009 Newsletter, I'll feature some of the MWFY participants. In particular, we'll take a look at the careers of Jim Beasley and his friend, the late Barry Kinder. We sorely miss Barry's contributions to the Detroit Memories Discussion Group.

'MAKE WAY FOR YOUTH'
If you were part of this chorus, I want to hear from you! info@detroitmemories.com
Please include your name, the years you participated, and any memories you'd like to share. All responses will be published next month.

1970's ~ Stevie Wonder reunites with Constance Beneduci Photo courtesy of Wayne State University
My grandmother, Constance Beneduci, was Stevie's teacher at Fitzgerald Elementary. She was made famous by Paul Harvey a few years back in one of his "The Rest of the Story" episodes that featured a story about Stevie, Constance and a classroom incident involving a mouse. (Click here for the Mouse Tale.)
We still receive mail for her about this story from people around the world.

DETROIT PHOTO GALLERY
STOUFFER'S
Recently I had my 86-year old aunt to my home. She brought along her photo album which has a ton of memories for me. I asked if I could scan some of her pictures and she said yes. I want to share one with you. Maybe you could use it in your Newsletter.
This is a picture of the workers at Stouffers #3 in Detroit taken Nov 27, 1950. My aunt's name is Kathleen Virginia Sayles. She is 4th from the left.
This Stouffer's was on Clifford, and Aunt Kathleen was part of the wait staff in the front of the store, serving desserts, sandwiches, etc. She is now 86 yrs old and was raised in Detroit at 1359 Butternut which is now part of the Motor City Casino.

THE ROAD THROUGH MOTOWN by Ralph Terrana
Musician, songwriter, producer, arranger, studio manager and sound man, Ralph Terrana has done it all. And here he tells it all, from the early days with the Glo-Worms and The Sunliners, a red hot band that would go on to become the legendary Rare Earth, creating, owning and running the fabled
Tera Shirma studios in Detroit, playing with Johnny and The Hurricanes, taking charge of Hitsville USA, home of the world-famous Motown Sound, and working with artists such as Meatloaf and Jeff Beck, Frank Wilson and the Funk Brothers, to enjoying a quieter post-Motown life on the West Coast with his wife, Jesse. This book is enriched with the flavour of the times, the music and the personalities that provided -- and continue to provide -- the soundtrack to billions of lives.

They offer Chili Dogs, Loose Burgers, Chili Fries plus, of course, Vernor's, Better Made, Faygo and Sanders!

HOW DID DETROIT'S STREETS GET THEIR NAMES?
ORIGIN OF DETROIT STREET NAMES
Woodward Avenue Named for Judge Augustus Brevoort Woodward, Woodward Avenue had its humble beginnings as a Native American hunting/traveling path.
Sears Named after the store built on that street.
Gratiot Avenue Also began as a Native American hunting/traveling path (some say at was a military road). Named after Gen. Charles Gratiot, the engineer in charge of the project. Construction on Gratiot was completed in 1831. (But I'll bet he didn't pronounce Gratiot like we do now.)
Michigan Ave. Another that began as a Native American hunting/traveling path.
Brush Street Named for Elijah Brush's farm (originally the Askin farm belonging to John Askin). Mary Bailey of the Detroit News writes, "Brush was named after Edmund Askin Brush, son of Elijah Brush, who was a leading lawyer and Detroit's second appointed mayor. Brush Street was also the Brush property boundary. Edmund studied law, as did his father before him. He was Secretary to the Governor and judge of the Michigan Territory in 1823, a private secretary to Lewis Cass in 1826, a court recorder, a member of the City Planning Commission and a police commissioner."
