Eileen:
I remember Ken Muse ( July 2010 ) from my days working with him at Macomb Community College in Warren .
I was a vocational counselor and Ken taught photography.
We worked in the same building and I would sit in on his
classes in the evenings after work to upgrade my
photographic skills.
Ken was a very funny, creative and busy person, doing
writing for both his cartoon strip, books and local TV shows
as well as his teaching duties. He will be missed.

DETROIT PHOTOS

The area where I grew up was known as Regent Park and had its own
small homeowners' group called The Regent Park Home Owners' Association .
All new homes had to be one-family structures, "x" feet from the curb,
made of brick, etc. The association was an active group that sponsored dances
card parties, etc. City Council members came to speak at the meetings.
To keep us teens busy, they started the Regent Park Teen Club .
Detroit's Regent Park is bounded by Gratiot / E. 8 Mile / Kelly Road / E. State Fair.

Dear Eileen:
Once again, one of the best Newsletters around. I always enjoy the read even though I haven't lived in Detroit in 44 years. And I still drink Vernor's !
You do a lot of work to put out this publication. Congratulations!

SECOND & FINAL NOTICE
I am an NYU professor writing a book on televised teen dance programs of the '50s and early '60s and am delighted to have found this website.
I would love to hear from anyone who was involved with the following shows in any way -- as a dance participant, producer, cameraman, or any other capacity.
"Ed McKenzie's Saturday Night"
Bud Davies's "Top Ten Dance Party"
Lee Alan & Joel Sebastian's "Club 1270"
I am interested both in what occurred on the dance floor and studio as well as what happened behind the scenes. The dances, music, planning of the show, logistics of scheduling, and community response to the show, are all of interest to me. Please email me at jmm2@nyu.edu . I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Julie Malnig

Hello Eileen,
I really enjoy your newsletter on Detroit each month. Thank you for doing it.
I was wondering if you could feature a story on the old Plum Street neighborhood.
It was roughly the area bounded by Michigan Ave , the Lodge Freeway and the Fisher Freeway . I remember going down there in the '60s for the stores, art, rock and roll, and the hippie activities. I don't believe that I have ever seen anything about Plum Street in your Detroit Memories Newsletters .
Are there any other readers who remember Plum Street ?
Thank you,
James A. vanBuskirk
Crestwood High School, Class of 67
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
A n Sw e R: They're sure are! Here's what Leon "Lee" Dixon wrote in the
"Plum Street was more or less a short trip from WSU main campus -- and that is where many of the clientele came from. I know -- I was one of them.
Plum was the main street for the area, but not the only street. The "shops" were mostly in old houses (at least one I recall was a beautiful old Victorian with lots of "gingerbread" all over the front porch), but not all of them. In fact, I knew people who ran shops and a restaurant there who actually lived in the house where the shop or restaurant was located. One place was patterned after a once-famous natural/organic restaurant on Sunset Strip in LA called "The Source." Like the LA restaurant, the only dishes sold at this Plum Street restaurant were supposedly organic and home-grown by hippies someplace. No meat was offered, as I recall. One couple I knew had a plant store and moved it to Greektown -- where some of the shops went when Plum closed down.
I well remember The Fifth Estate underground newspaper. A lot of it was influenced heavily by L.A. and San Francisco underground papers and others. But Detroit had its own spin on things, of course.
I was a student at Wayne State for a couple of years and I also well remember
The South End . The paper was a constant source of controversy -- which is exactly what it wanted to be in those days. There was always a tug of war of politics and polar extremes with that paper and it often went over the ragged edge -- which just served to make people read it more -- even those who hated it.
At one point it pushed for (and basically succeeded in getting) shutting the University down for a love fest and anti-war (Viet Nam) rally that ended up in a sizable march down Woodward to Grand Circus Park . The march was AFTER a day of music on campus (the big headline band was Savage Grace ) and endless speeches mostly by people nobody knew.
Plum Street vendors were on campus selling all kinds of wares that day. It was a strange and interesting time. "
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
And another from Ellen in Seattle:
The mention of Plum Street brings back some memories for me. My dad worked for
Detroit Edison and part of his job involved maintaining the employee parking
lots and outdoor areas making sure everyone parked where they belonged. He
actually made a lot of friends with the "hippies" on Plum Street (it was in the
shadow of the Edison buildings) and he'd come home from work sometimes bearing
presents for me from them. I had a nice assortment of love beads, shirts and
posters. I was only 11-12 yrs old at that time and remember being in awe when he finally took me down to see Plum Street and to meet the folks there.
