GOT QUESTIONS?

DETROIT TV GUY ED GOLICK
Webmaster of www.DetroitKidShow.com
and a vintage Detroit TV show expert

If you have a question you'd like Ed to answer, email it to info@detroitmemories.com

~~~~~~~~
QUESTION:  Question for the "King of Detroit Kids TV"... What is the scat song that Pookie sings at the start of his appearances on the Soupy Sales show?
Scott Westerman
Albuquerque, NM
ED:  That would be "Mumbles" by The Oscar Peterson Trio and sung by Clark Terry,
      whose nickname was "Mumbles" because of his unusual scat style.
      (Thanks to John Townsend for the additional information on this answer.)
~~~~~~~~

QUESTION:  Regarding the theme song for
Milky's Movie Party....I'm not sure if it was Milky's
"main theme" or the theme for the Willy Dooit
segment, but I recall a song related to classical music.
I heard it once since played over the speakers at a
local grocery store in California, but I can't remember
the name. Can you help?

Patti Grantner

ED:  The musical piece used for the show was
"Fiddle Faddle" by Leroy Anderson.

NEVADA-DETROITERS UPDATE

WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF SEEING THIS IN LAS VEGAS?
So, I'm pulling out of a parking space in the jam-packed lot at the Orleans hotel
in LV on Sunday evening (8/23) on my way to meet two former Detroiters, and
I noticed the license plates of the car parked across from me (above).
Unbelieveable. It took this as an omen for me to gamble my entire 401(k).

I met J.C. Simon (Nativity '67) and Elizabeth Lowe (Tecumsah)
at the Imperial Palace's Classic Car Showroom.
My brother, Al Trombley (Lakeview, '76) and my nephew and niece,
Alex and Mya (both born at St. John Hospital) joined us. They were on their way
back home to Torrence CA after a two-week trip to Michigan.

LEFT: Al, Alex and Mya Trombley at the Imperial Palace showroom of "The Auto Collections."
RIGHT: J.C. Simon, Elizabeth Lowe (Michigan shirt) and me, Eileen, at the Human Nature show.

After enjoying a pizza and pasta dinner at one of IP's restaurants,
J.C., Elizabeth and I went to see Human Nature, a Smokey Robinson
presentation featuring a group of four Aussie guys who sing
all Motown songs. Just watching them dance is worth the price of admission.
In no time, they had everyone up on their feet, singing and dancing along.
If you find yourself in 'Lost Wages' and love Motown, don't miss this show.

~~~~~~~~
The better part of my Las Vegas getaway was spent with my
sister Diane Trombley McKay (Regina '68) and my brother-in-law,
'Birthday Guy' Dave McKay (St. Mary, Mt. Clemens '67)
who are full-time residents of Panama Beach, Florida.
Dave thought Vegas would be a perfect place to celebrate his 60th.
We spent the morning of his B-day wandering around Hoover Dam, mostly
to see the new by-pass bridge being constructed over the Colorado River.
It's an astounding feat of engineering, with expected completion in Fall 2010.
Then it was time for lunch.
LEFT: Motor City Coney Island in Henderson NV
RIGHT: Patty Batwins amid the Detroit memorabilia
Well, being good 'Detroiters,' it was off to the Motor City Coney Island
in Henderson NV, run by former SW Detroiter, Patty Batwins (Western '67).
Her son, Manuel Sanchez, opened M.C.C.I. three years ago.
We introduced ourselves and Patty was a delightful 'hostess.'
As it happened, Paul and Linda, former Dearborn residents were also
in the restaurant grabbing a bite, so we chatted with them, too.
The walls are loaded with signatures of Detroiters, past and present.
Detroit sports teams jerseys, penants and posters are everywhere.
And, thanks to Elizabeth (mentioned above),
there's a donated Detroit Memories poster hanging in there, too.
Dave and I ordered Chili Dogs (excellent!), a Vernors and a bag of
Better Made chips. Diane got a Sanders Hot Fudge Sundae
(which she said was to-die-for and refused to share).
So, if you find yourself near Las Vegas with a hankerin' for genuine
Detroit Chili Dogs, Loose Burgers, Chili Fries, Vernor's, Better Made,
Faygo or Sanders, stop in!
And make sure you tell Patty that Detroit Memories sent you!
Hi Eileen,
I am one of your subscribers to Detroit Memories. I have also been involved with the two Boblo Boats for many years. I am one of the members of the Ste. Claire Restoration Crew, and I am also involved with the SS Columbia Project's effort to save our dear old Columbia.
SMOKEY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
BY GAIL MITCHELL
BILLBOARD MAGAZINE
The songs alone speak volumes. "Shop Around." "You've Really Got a Hold on Me." "Ooo Baby Baby." "The Tracks of My Tears." "I Second That Emotion."
"The Tears of a Clown." "My Guy." "My Girl." "Cruisin'." "Being With You."
These are just a handful of the classics written and, in many cases, uniquely interpreted by William "Smokey" Robinson, who was born and raised in Detroit.
The singer-songwriter is celebrating his 50th anniversary in music this year,
as is the iconic label Motown Records. On the eve of the release of Robinson's
new studio album, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun," on his own
ROBSO Records, Billboard talked to the man behind the beloved tunes.
You'll find more photos, a video interview with the brothers,
vintage footage of Twin Pines plant on the east side,
This truck was at this year's Autorama at Cobo Hall
where it took first place for a vehicle built between 1936-1948.
You can also find it at many of the local auto shows.
